Books are very important to the development of an individual’s mind. They make understanding new information much easier. Reading is also important to an individual as it helps them to sort out relevant information. By reading, a person can determine what they are interested in as they grow older. Books are, no doubt, a great resource. They are food for thought, and moreover, they console us in our sorrow and they make us forget about the worries of life. Over the past years, I have read many books that have definitely enriched my knowledge. But none of them have impressed me as The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. To me this book is one of the finest books in the world. In fact this novel is so remarkable that it made history and changed the course of events. The Jungle’s excellent qualities have made it my favorite book. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle was first published in the United States in 1906. This book became an immediate success as it portrayed the corruption within American business and government. Sinclair based the novel on the American meatpacking industry. He describes, in shocking detail, the conditions of corruption in America and the ways it affected the lives of individuals involved. The Jungle centers on Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant working on Chicago’s infamous Packingtown. Instead of living the â€Å"American Dream†, Jurgis and his family occupy a vicious, intimidating urban jungle dictated by greedy employers, ruthless con-men, and immoral politicians.

I think this is a great security feature, although it can be a little annoying to have to sign back in. Kant And Utilitarianism First of all I want to state the Kantian and the Utilitarian views butt heads on this issue. The Kantian view is nonconsequential, that is as a matter of principle with the consequences be damned. The Utilitarian view is consequential with the results given as much consideration as possible. I will attempt to explain what I mean through some examples. Some school systems hand out condoms free of charge to their students. The Utilitarian view would be that this is a good thing. They would state that by doing so they are stopping unwanted pregnancies that in turn could cost society. This program would help stop the spreading of diseases such as HIV, AIDS and syphilis. This also would lesson the burden on society. Kantian view would not be in favor of this program because it is considering the outcome of what might happen if the program were not in place. They might feel it is the parent's decision to make because it is their job to act in good will of their family and not the school system's. Another topic under much debate would be assisted suicide. The Kantian view is totally opposed to this. It is just wrong to kill someone. One cannot kill another person out of good will. If you were to apply this to the Universal Law it would not hold true and there for it is wrong. On the other hand, the Utilitarian view would be open to this concept. How could we allow one to suffer knowing they are going to die in the end anyway? Would it be wrong to stop the suffering? How can one seek the greatest amount of happiness if they are suffering and are basically condemned to die? By assisting this individual we are also helping out his family by limiting their grief. We are also helping out society by freeing up a bed in the hospital for those individuals that could be healed and go on to lead a happy life. It could also save money if the person does not have insurance. The last example I want to use is the needle exchange program. This is where drug users can exchange dirty needles for clean ones. Drug users are also associated to crime and when they come into exchange needles help may be provided to get them off drugs and there fore lesson the crime rate and bring more happiness to society. The Kantian view would not be in favor of this program because it is considering the consequences of what would happen if community doesn't help. They would state that drug use is not good will and not at all duty. If a drug user is breaking the law by using drugs and needles they should be punished. This punishment is not to be a deterrent but rather what is right because one breaks the law. I Think the Utilitarian view is better than the Kantian view because it does consider the outcomes of the event. Though I am not wholly sold on their concept. The Kantian view does not address the problem it just condemns it. In the world today we all know what happens when a person breaks the law and so do the criminals yet; they still break the law. When someone is addicted to a drug it is out of their control to help themselves and society as a whole should step in and help. Their does come a time when you can help only so much and it is up to the individual to correct their own wrong but not in all circumstances. La Belle Dame Sans Merci shows a mystical woman and how the knight falls in love with her. All the poems have two to four characters included which of them two are the man and the woman who are in love or hate relationship and the others being jealous. My interpretation will be on My Last Duchess by Robert Browning and La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats. Both titles may tell the reader what the poem is based on and what may happen. In the poem, My Last Duchess, the duke explains how she was his LAST duchess and what happened to her. Brownings poem is a dramatic monologue and the La Belle Dame Sans Merci being a ballad which is known for the end to be tragic in French meaning the beautiful woman with no mercy. This title shows us how there would be a good looking girl who used her beauty to entice the men. Ballads are poems that are usually sung in an orchestral manner and emphasises on stress lines. Dramatic monologues is like a speech made by one of the character. The main story of My Last Duchess in brief would be that there was a duke who had ordered his wife to be killed as he was not satisfied of her due to her exchanging smiles with other men. He felt unsecured and also jealous of her wife being so beautiful that she could attract other people and that the other men would look at her and compliment her. The core narrative in La Belle Dame Sans Merci was about an unknown woman who spoke another language and maybe mythical. The writer does not give us full details about the lady and the information given is vague and is left for the reader to complete her description. The knight meets this mysterious lady that captures him into her trap. Alone and palely loitering he is shown as being lonely and depressed throughout the poem and also fantasises in being in love with a faerys child. There are a lot of different ways to explore ideas in the two poems. The methods used in both of the poems are to define the settings to a limit in to where the characters of the poem can be introduced. In the first two stanzas of La Belle Dame Sans Merci, the poet describes the nature by the use of tame animals as no birds sing and the squirrels granary is full. Similarly, in My Last Duchess the first 10 lines starts informally with vivid and abrupt information about who the duchess was and who painted the portrait. Noticing that there is no reference of the word duke throughout the whole poem and he is only shown as husband, your master and sir. He does not call himself the duke and he uses his predominance with his royal word selection. Throughout the poem, in My Last Duchess, the duke shows him self as being a highly and bossy aristocrat. This poem is spoken in 1st person with a silent listener. This shows that the duke was not fond of being interrupted between his talks and also he expected the listener to listen well. The duke emphasises on the painting as if it were a masterpiece drawn by a great artist. He also is very proud of nine-hundred-years-old name showing the different types of arts he had that he was loved arts of different eras and also getting it specially painted by a great artist who is unknown but told to the readers to be Fra` Pandolf. He places this hand painted picture behind the curtain. This shows that he is in level with god to kill and take lives of people. The dukes relationship with the duchess was a divine bond of marriage which comprises of some mutual promises. As observed in the poem, he did not treat the duchess like his wife and only used her for a figure and femininity. He was too over protective over his wife because her looks went everywhere. The duke did not want to stoop in to wasting his time teaching his wife (s) what he expected them of and to what standards. The duke is also sceptical as he highlights that this is his last duchess. La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a folk ballad by John Keats. This ballad conveys a moral and a lot of repetition are used to create emphasis. In the first three stanzas there is not much details about the characters and sets the scene as where the event followed by happens. In the poem, lots of imagery is used to create prominence towards the dramatic effect. For example, cheeks a fading rose this line makes the reader visualise the fading pink in their minds. This tries to put the reader in to the book as they are included by imagery. This poem is left for the reader to understand and to allow them to use their imagination. This poem is read out in first person, and there is a silent listener. In the poem, there are many references to warning but it is left aside by the knight as he was captured in to the unknown ladys web. Her eyes were wild, made sweet moan and language strange shows us that she was weird and abnormal. It also shows how wild she was and the reader can maybe call her to be a vicious animal. In this poem, the relationship is controlled by the unknown lady. They have romance and the knight thought that she said I love thee true in a different language being fantasising until he is being made to sleep by the lady. The relationship between the unknown lady and this knight are formal and they are two strangers. They fall in love from the knights point of view. The person saying the poem could be the narrator or an imaginary person. They have no proper relationship between the two other than the romance they have between them. This poem conversely, with the other poem, shows that the woman had more power than the man in this poem because of her beauty and in My Last Duchess the man had more power because of his wealth and status. My Last Duchess being written in 1842, shows more new English than the La Belle Dame Sans Merci which is written in 1819 which is generally old English. Women were still unequal to men at those times and were thought as a mans possession and nothing more. They did not have much fame in this period of early pre 19th century poems. Robert browning had more experience in writing poems than John Keats as he died at the age of 26 and My Last Duchess was written where Browning was 30 years old. In the poem, My Last Duchess, there is a reference to his old name and he is proud of it. Hes been passed this wealth and status by his ancestors. In La Belle Dame Sans Merci, there is no context of historical background shown. In this era, the audience use to be interested in love and hate related poems. We can research that My Last Duchess was based in Italy as Ferrara was a city in the north of Italy and La Belle Dame Sans Merci being in France or Britain, because the title itself suggests it would be in France. Nearly all men at that era were centric as they had pride in themselves of being a man. The structure of the poem is also important. The structure of My Last Duchess includes iambic pentameters for e. g. lines 1-2 from My Last Duchess. It also has a ABAB rhyming scheme throughout the whole poem. The structure of this poem being a dramatic monologue the speaker is telling the whole poem with a silent listener in the poem. There is more dramatic effect and we sympathize with the speaker as he is telling a story from his point of view. The structure of La Belle Dame Sans Merci uses a typical ballad-style rhyming scheme by using ABCB. There are 8 syllables in the first three lines of each stanza and the last being 4 syllables. This shows us that the first three lines are longer than the last line which is a quick paced sentence. This poem being a folk ballad, there is a story in a song and has 4-6 lines in each stanza. Keats also used melancholy as a base theme for the knight as before he met the lady, he was depressed and even after meeting the lady, he is shown as being more depressed and lonelier. Keats shows this distress by the repetition of alone in the first and the last stanza which shows he was distressed and still is distressed after falling in love with a mystical woman. All the poems share some common characteristics of the theme of love, hate and jealousy. They are pre 19th poems which were likely to include these themes in the poem to gain readers interest. There are some similarities between the poems. All of them include some sort of romance between the man and the woman but most of them are mystical, mythical or unrealistic or they involve some of the characters to be lonely. Most of the poems also include references to aristocracy. The main key reference is to death. All the poems include death in some form. The poets all use symbolism within their poems by using colour or natural imagery. On the other hand, they also have differences between all the five poems. The titles of the poems refer to a character in the poem such as My Last Duchess being the duchess in the poem, The Highway Man being the highway man itself. Jealousy is involved in all the poems other than La Belle Dame Sans Merci as there are two people involved and there is no hate but a mystical character takes the life of a real person. Finally, two of the poems are monologues and the other three poems are ballads. My favourite poem was The Highway Man because it was a tragic story in a poem and being a ballad its meant to be sung. It is livelier if you are listening to the ballad of this poem being sung. It was a theme based on sacrifice and immense love that the two lovers would give their life away to save the other. There is a solemn understanding between the characters until the third person who is jealous comes in to their peaceful lives to disrupt them and at this extent to have them killed as he was in love with the highway mans wife. Alfred Noyes uses the typical structure of setting the scene, introducing the characters, the plot and then the ending. The characters also match with the period as in the pre 19th century, the highway men were seen as romantic figures, bold and dressed formally. The poem I disliked was The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson. I disliked this poem because the poem is really unrealistic and now in modern days, no one believes in curses as much as they do in ghosts. They would rather agree with the knight that he was talking to a unknown lady than to agree with someone getting cursed and then therefore they can only see the town in the mirrors reflection. It is more like a fairy tale than a poem thats in a ballad form.

The book details the life and experiences of one of the world’s most renowned neurosurgeons, from the time he was considered a dunderhead in elementary school to the time he became one of the brightest medical students and surgeons of his time. This book not only underlines the effectiveness of hard work and determination, but also renews individual faith in God while also cementing the immaterial nature of the humbleness of one’s beginnings in determining his destiny. First, â€Å"Think Big† underlines the efficacy of hard work in safeguarding the achievement of one’s goals and objectives. Indeed, the author attributes the change in his performance in school to the hard work and effort that he put in the class. He details how he went the extra mile and read not only the topics and subjects that were assigned in the classroom but also other subjects that were not even remotely connected or associated with the course he was doing (Clarrissimeaux, 2011). This personal initiative and hard work came in handy in expanding his critical thinking faculties and enhancing his performance even in the course that he took. For instance, as much as he had worked hard, he still attributed his success in education to God. Indeed, the notes that if individuals acknowledge their need for God, He will be quick to assist them. Other examples are provided during more serious scenarios such as when he was performing his first brain surgery, the first one in the hospital where he was working (Lozada, 2015). This renewed my faith in God as it underlines the fact that irrespective of the magnitude of individual accomplishments and wisdom, individuals are still limited and, in fact, will always need God. Lastly, the book underlined the fact that one’s beginnings should not determine his capacity to achieve his dreams. It is acknowledged that the author did not come from an affluent background. Being a black son of a single mother, he details how his family did not always have sufficient resources (Carson Murphey, 1996). His mother’s income was not sufficient to bring up the two boys and provide luxuries in which case they were merely surviving. However, he states that one’s beginnings or looks do not matter and that if individuals recognize their abilities and have the willingness to learn and utilize their knowledge in assisting others, their place in the world is intact (Carson Murphey, 2006). This cements the fact that the quality of life that an individual has is solely determined by his actions and the choices he or she makes. If supply is greater than demand, the price of a product will decrease. If demand is greater than supply, the price of a product will increase. This is a simple rule that determines the price of almost all consumer goods. But what happens if the price is too high. What happens if there is a massive shortage or if a war breaks out and the price of everyday products such as sugar or bread skyrockets. Who will protect the consumer? And vice versa, who will protect the seller. This is where the government steps in and imposes price controls. Price controls are imposed to help or protect particular parts of the population which would be treated unequally by the unfettered price system. With today's technology, many farmers around the world find themselves producing far more than they can sell or a surplus and this drives down prices. Therefore to support the farmers, many governments have created price floors to increase the income of their farmers who without them would fail to make a living profit. Japanese agricultural policy so far has focused on maintaining agricultural income by price controls. During the 1960s, Japan was in a stage of extraordinarily rapid growth. But Japanese farmers still produced more crops, namely rice, then they could sell, and this drove prices down and dwindled their profits. All the while, the industrial sector began creating massive profits. As a result, the income gap between the two was widening. Politicians knew that social and political unrest would result if the situation worsened. And so they began to resort to price controls to protect agriculture. To increase the farmers' income, the government placed price floors or price supports on rice and other crops. Therefore, the price of rice would not be determined by the free market but by this set price. The Japanese government set the price floor higher than the equilibrium price or the price of rice in the free market. By doing this they were sure to increase the income of farmers. But this policy had its drawbacks. The price policy impaired the basic market mechanisms. The increased price drew away buyers, resulting in an excessive surplus of rice. In fact, rice surplus amounted to approximately seven million tons in storage, and that required three trillion yen of tax money for its disposal. Although this policy helped farmers, it became a great strain on the government and taxpayers. The Japanese government began to implement a new policy. The only way to avoid surplus under such a high price policy is to limit production. Hence, a policy to cut back on rice acreage was introduced. But this policy also ran into problems. Reduced production was forced onto the producers and served only to dampen their motivation to produce and to hinder their drive. Another hindrance in price control is a segregated overseas and domestic market. The only way for the government to retain this kind of price policy and maintain agricultural income is by closing off its borders form imports. With this price control the government ran into many problems. It therefore abolished the Food Staple Control Act which implemented this price policy and replaced it with the New Food Staple Control Act in November 1995. This new act liberated distribution and limited the government's role to just the purchase and management of rice reserves. In conclusion, Japan's price control policy was created with the best intentions to improve agriculture income. While it succeeded in that aspect, the government and its people were hurt more by this policy. Even the farmers themselves who had their production limited became unmotivated. We see from this case scenario that sometimes the government needs to take a step back and play a limited role in the economy or practice laissez-faire economics.

I have been asked to produce a clear set of notes to go with my presentation of Dove and Manchester United fully comparing the effectiveness of the marketing concepts and principals. First of all I am going to start comparing the similarities of the aims of the two businesses. This is that Manchester United wants to become the best football club on and off the pitch. Dove has a similar aim which is trying to grow its brand of the real beauty campaign for women. This will be effective for both branding companies as they will become one of the top sellers when it comes to future high standards. Promotion Same- Manchester United and Dove communicate the promotion of their product by using the media like for e.g. TV. This leads to attracting more of the public households. Another technique used to promote their product is by In-Store displays, this leads to attracting customers as well as communicating where the item is going to be sold at. They both also promote on their websites this leads to more information on that product as well as other products of their brand being available. Different- The communication through TV can be different as Manchester United have their own channel called â€Å"MUTV†, whereas, Dove only provide a 5 minute advertisement on their product. The two different methods that Manchester united use are the pitch and the players themselves this is because a football club is part of leisure/ hobbies. This leads to fans seeing more of the product. Dove uses magazines to promote their Pro-Age product as this leads to attracting more females as this product is part of a real women campaign who are aged over 40. Effectiveness- Dove is effective in reaching its target market as they communicate the product using many ways of the media as they know that every household has at least one modern technology item so the message will definitely reach the target market. Dove does not recommend this method because it would refer for a large postal charge as depended on the weight of the product/s. Effectiveness- Dove’s choice of place to sell the product is very effective because it is in the high street where the local public go, so this leads to people not having to travel further than there high street to buy the product so they are what tend to be happy customers. This also would be recommended to other females so the brand gains more profit and this leads to having to manufacture and sell more of that product. Manchester united has chosen an effective place which is via their website. It is effective because this way customers get a wider range of items to choose from and buy. So this leads to selling more merchandise as people will want to buy more of their products e.g. if a person wanted to buy a mug and saw a larger variety of products then they will end up buying a lot more like for example buying an extra t-shirt and an extra mouse mat to go with their computer. Price Same- Dove’s pricing strategy for the Pro-Age product would be from  £2-15 depending entirely on the manufacturing size of the product like for example 15ml/ 30ml. They understand that the product is aimed at households with real women of all ages over 40 and all different ethnicity’s/ backgrounds. This also would depend on the same products pricing but of a different brand like for example Nivea, this would lead to competitors prices dropping to match or under-cutting the other brands so that the competition increases between all the leading brands. Manchester united, however, have to base their product pricing at a fixed rate with the competitors club/ business because fans will not be happy and will end up in an argument. The pricing depends on the individual name and number on the back of the t-shirt like for example Ronaldo- number 7 would be at the highest fixed rate as he is the best player for Manchester united. The prices vary from  £46-57 after that. Appropriate- Dove’s pricing is appropriate as it is used as a daily product so spending  £2-15 for a product is reasonable in this case. Manchester united’s pricing is also appropriate as they are popular to their fans especially and they have set their aim of becoming the best football club on and off the pitch so this would lead to gaining more profit. Product Type- Dove manufactures their products for beauty range of women. These are not just a limited type of women; these are women of all shapes and sizes, ethnicity and age over 40. The beauty products of Dove are required for every household as it is a leading brand product but it is also a product that helps allow women to pamper themselves and look after their skin. Manchester united, on the other hand, manufactures and sells their products to fans of the football club as this method shows the players and other fans supporting competitors that Manchester united has got a large supporting fan base showing wisdom to their team. This leads to helping Manchester united to achieve their aim of becoming the best football club on and off the pitch. Range- The range of products from Dove varies around the 100 real women beauty campaign. This is because they are focusing on achieving their aim which is to grow its brand in the real beauty campaign. Whereas, Manchester united set out a larger variety of products because they want to keep ahead of the competitiveness by producing a lot more products but keeping a fixed rate on prices, this leads to fans expecting more products being purchased into the market and spending more money this helps Manchester united increasing the percentage of profits. Compare- Both Manchester united and Dove want to be a successful brand focusing on their target market. They produce and manufacture a whole range of products developing their ideas to make them suitable for the target market. The only difference is that the target market for each individual brand are different towards one another as Dove target women over 40 and Manchester united target both boy/men and girls/women who are into football as part of either leisure time or as a hobby. Effectiveness- Dove is effective in producing the appropriate product range and type as they know exactly who their target market is. This helps them develop their ideas because the testing of the product helps the brand understand if their product is suitable for these women in the public or if it actually needs to be developed meeting the customer’s needs and wants from the product. I am now going to go onto comparing how Manchester united and Dove apply to the 4 principals of marketing to their products effectively. Then I going to go onto which of the two businesses has applied to the marketing principals effectively. Manchester united- for this I am going to give you an example of either a product/ service. So I have decided that my example will be of a service which is accommodating events like for example weddings, birthdays, etc. 1. The first one is â€Å"the understanding of the needs and wants of the consumer†. Manchester United would do this by communicating with the customer between the date that they came to see the accommodation and the date they want to use the accommodation for their event so in between that time they have to look after the customers wants and needs like for example the customer wants a wedding and the colour theme is white and pink so they have to give feedback to each other if there are any problems and if everything is going according to plan. 2. The second one would be â€Å"keeping ahead of competition†. They would do this by providing their accommodation at a cheaper price that others or by simply providing more quantity for the same price. Like for example if the price was for a particular amount of people say for example 350 then for the same price they can allow 420 people to come so that their reputation becomes higher than other accommodations 3. The third principle of marketing for the business would be the effective communication with consumers. This means that Manchester United as â€Å"Old Trafford would have to contact the customers who are locating their event at the accommodation informing them of any problems and also informing the customers if their needs and wants are being responded to. 4. The final principle for Manchester United â€Å"Old Trafford† would be the need of Utilising new technology for the customers and the employees at Manchester United. This would lead to all work being completed faster and if there are any changes to be made for the event then the whole description does not need to be re-written.
